DIY Eyeliner Recipe
Here’s a simple formula using common kitchen ingredients that can be adapted for a basic eyeliner:
Ingredients:
Activated Charcoal Powder – For color (Black)
Properties: Charcoal is used as a natural pigment and provides a rich, deep black color, perfect for eyeliner.
Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch – To thicken and set the eyeliner
Properties: These are natural starches that can help thicken the formula, giving it the right consistency for application. Arrowroot is preferred for sensitive skin.
Coconut Oil – For smoothness and application
Properties: Coconut oil is a natural emollient that helps the eyeliner glide on smoothly. It also provides some moisture and prevents the formula from being too dry or crumbly.
Beeswax – To bind the ingredients and add structure
Properties: Beeswax is a natural wax that helps create a solid structure for the eyeliner while preventing smudging. It’s also skin-safe and long-lasting.
Vitamin E Oil – For preservation and skin nourishment
Properties: Vitamin E acts as a preservative and also nourishes the delicate skin around the eyes.
Essential Oils (optional) – For fragrance or skin benefits
Properties: Essential oils like lavender or tea tree oil can add fragrance and antibacterial properties to the eyeliner, though they should be used sparingly around the eyes.
Tools Needed:
Small mixing bowl
Double boiler (or small saucepan and heatproof bowl for melting)
Stirring stick or spatula
Small container or jar for storing the eyeliner
Clean brush for application
Procedure:
Melt the Base:
In a double boiler, melt 1 tablespoon of beeswax and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil together. Stir to combine. Heat gently to ensure the beeswax fully melts.
Add Pigment:
Once the base is melted, add 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal powder. Stir well to ensure that the charcoal is fully incorporated into the oil and beeswax mixture. This will give the eyeliner its rich black color.
Thicken the Formula:
To achieve the right consistency, add 1 teaspoon of arrowroot powder or cornstarch. Stir thoroughly to thicken the mixture and ensure it’s smooth.
Add Vitamin E:
Add 1/4 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil to the mixture for preservation and nourishment.
Essential Oils (Optional):
If desired, you can add a few drops of an essential oil like lavender (up to 1–2 drops), but be cautious with this step. The eye area is very sensitive, so essential oils should be used sparingly and avoided if there's any irritation.
Cool and Set:
Once the mixture is well-blended, pour it into a small container or jar. Allow the eyeliner to cool and set. It should firm up as it cools.
Application:
Use an eyeliner brush or angled brush to apply the eyeliner to your eyelids. You can apply it dry for a matte finish or wet for a more intense look.
Adjustments & Customization:
For a creamier consistency: If you find the eyeliner too dry, add a little more coconut oil or beeswax. For a firmer consistency, add more beeswax.
For a colored eyeliner: You can add a small amount of cocoa powder for brown eyeliner, or other natural pigments like turmeric for yellow tones or spirulina for green tones.
